Marlene has served for 7 years as a development consultant for Care Resource, a $100+ million community health center serving 26,000+ individuals and families annually across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. She played a pivotal role in establishing their Development infrastructure and Capital Fund to support building renovations and expansions in Midtown Miami, Broward County, and Little Havana. She collaborates closely with executive development and management staff, providing expertise for ongoing and new program development.
Stepping into the role of Interim Executive Director of Miami Bridge Youth & Family Services, Marlene took charge of day-to-day operations of Miami Bridge, for 18 months guiding the organization through a challenging crisis. Her leadership not only ensured the preservation and enhancement of vital services but also paved the way for a game-changing merger. She facilitated a successful merger with Lutheran Services Florida, strengthening the organization's 48-year legacy of serving at-risk youth in Miami Dade County.
As interim executive director of Switchboard Miami, Marlene prevented the shutdown of a $5 million nonprofit, safeguarding resources for over 120,000 individuals served yearly and preserving 90 staff members' jobs. Collaborating with the Board and Roxanne Ortiz, CPA, they successfully identified a nonprofit partner and transferred program funding, employees, and programs, including the 211 Call Center, Family Counseling Services, and government-funded grant programs for at-risk youth, to Jewish Community Services. Additionally, they worked with pro bono attorneys from prestigious Miami law firms to facilitate the transfer of $1 million in federal funding and the ABC corporate closure of the Switchboard Miami entity.
She served a four-year term as President of the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove where she reinvigorated the Club. She has instituted novel approaches to financial management, business operations as well as fundraising. Her work with the Club has laid the groundwork for its continuity and growth into the future.
During her 14-year career with the Alpha-1 Community, she played a pivotal role in building the Alpha-1 Foundation into a $20 million research organization as its Development & Marketing Director and also headed the Alpha-1 Association, turning it into one of the top rare disease patient membership organizations in the country until its merger with the Alpha-1 Foundation in 2014. She was previously led The Erven Group, a Miami-based consulting firm for seven years that included a client roster of the American Cancer Society and The Children's Home Society, and The Kampong among others, before joining the Alpha-1 Foundation in 2000. She is the former Executive Director of Cedars Medical Center Foundation.
With over two decades of civic engagement in Coconut Grove, she is passionate about empowering the community and driving positive change. As president of the Coconut Grove Park Homeowners Association for more than 10 years, she has fostered unity among residents, advocated on key issues, and collaborated with organizations such as One Grove, the Coconut Grove Village Council, and local HOAs.
